Quantum Numbers
The number of electrons that can be found in each energy level can be determined by squaring the principle quantum number (n) and multiplying it by 2.
The principle quantum number gives information about relative electron cloud size. - The second quantum number, ll, is the energy sublevel number and can range in value from 0 to n - - It gives information about the shape of the electron cloud. - Each energy level is really several different energy states grouped together, these energy states are sublevels and are described with the quantum number l.
The Principle Quantum number, n, is the energy level number. It can have values of 1, 2, 3, and so on.
The different sublevels are assigned values. The first sublevel is s and has the value of 0, the second sublevel is p and has the value of 1. The third sublevel is d and has the value of 2. The fourth sublevel is f which has been assigned the value of 3. The first energy level only has an s sublevel, the second energy level has a s and a p sublevel and soon.
The Orbital Quantum Number - the third quantum number (m) is used to distinguish between the orbitals in the same level - orbital is the space occupied by a pair of electrons
The Spin Quantum Number - the fourth quantum number (s) - Spin is either clockwise or counterclockwise (designated as either +1/2 of -1/2)
The Energy Sublevel Number -the second quantum number (l) -can range for zero to n - 1 -provides information about the electron clouds' shape -The sublevels are s (l = 0), p (l = 1), d (l = 2), and f (l = 3)
